MMEA Statement on Mississippi House Bill 2 (2026)

The Mississippi Music Educators Association surveyed 213 music educators statewide and found that 88% oppose House Bill 2.MMEA values the work of music educators in all educational settings and recognizes our shared commitment to serving students through high-quality music education. Our opposition to HB 2 is not directed at educators or schools, but at policies that redirect public funds in ways that risk destabilizing public education and limiting student access.

Educators expressed consistent concern that HB 2 would divert critical resources from public schools—particularly in rural and low-income communities where public schools are often the primary provider of music and arts education. When funding becomes uncertain, music and arts programs are frequently the first to be reduced or eliminated.

Music education depends on stable enrollment, long-term planning, and sustained investment. HB 2 introduces uncertainty that threatens program continuity, increases teacher workload, and weakens accountability for how public funds are used.Public education is a public good. Public funds should remain in public schools.
